Sweden’s SSAB agrees fossil-free steel supply with DS StalprofilIssuing time:2023-05-07 11:21 Swedish steelmaker SSAB said May 5 that Danish steel profile manufacturer DS Stalprofil is to start taking delivery of its fossil-free steel from 2026. SSAB added that the Danish company plans to use the fossil-free steel in its roof cladding and facade products, without providing any further details on the supply agreement. “Building sustainably — not only in use phase but also from the materials used for the building — is becoming more and more important,” SSAB Europe Sales Director Jan Meier said in the statement. “In the shift towards low-carbon economy, our steel products will be a key contributor for contractors, architects, and builders to meet their climate goals,” DS Stalprofil CEO Thomas Rasmussen said. “The fossil-free steel has a long service life and is 100% recyclable.” SSAB said it plans to launch fossil-free steel on a commercial scale in 2026 and to largely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from its operations by around 2030. The steelmaker works with iron ore producer LKAB and energy company Vattenfall as part of the HYBRIT initiative to develop a value chain for fossil-free iron- and steel production, replacing the coking coal traditionally used for iron ore-based steelmaking with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. |
